The Dirty Work: Cotton Case Study

Apr 11, 2017
Case Study 1 BioFlora® began our first trial on Cotton (variety Bayer Fibermax®) in Tahoka, Texas on 70 acres. The purpose of this trial was to determine whether using GOgreen®, would improve soil and plant health, while increasing yields.
Treated, thicker taproot & higher number of lateral and adventitious roots
Control, notice underdeveloped root structure
In our dryland field, GOgreen was broadcast sprayed two weeks before planting with pre-emergence herbicide. No other NPK inputs were used. This trial utilized three fields to collect data. Field 1 received 1 qt/acre of GOgreen Field 2 received 2 qts/acre of GOgreen Field 3 received no GOgreen GOgreen® is a matrix of freshwater green and yellow-green algae species acquired by our Integrated Life Science Research Center® (ILSRC). These species are grown and cultivated in state-of-the-art research facilities using an organic, patented process. The proteins, enzymes, and polysaccharides found in this algal solution combine with one another to help growers realize improved production. Of particular interest in this trial was GOgreen’s ability to improve soil crumb structure, increase soil moisture retention, increase organic matter, enhance root growth, promote microbial diversity, and reduce sodium levels. Our Results In the GOgreen treated soil, sodium levels decreased by an average of 37%. Treated soil organic matter increased by an average of 8% versus the control.
BioFlora treated field, notice larger plants with more cotton bolls per plant
Control field with no GOgreen, notice smaller plants with less cotton bolls
Treated plants averaged 10 bolls per plant at harvest. The control averaged 6 bolls per plant at harvest. The GOgreen treated plants were larger than the control plants. The yield on treated plots was 3/4 bale per acre in extreme drought conditions. The yield on untreated plots was 1/2 bale per acre. GOgreen Species Worldwide, there is a tendency towards a shift from chemical-based conventional farming towards low input, sustainable or organic, alternative agriculture. To meet the increasing demand, BioFlora has researched many viable options, including algae. Our research has led us to three algal species we use in GOgreen: Chlorella vulgaris, Nannochloris atomus, and Scenedesmus quadricauda. Together, these cells function as a food source since they are high in protein and other nutrients essential for plant growth and soil improvement.
BioFlora treated cotton plants, with increased yield, thicker green leaves and more branches.
Control cotton plant with no GOgreen, notice lack of yield, discolored leaves, and thinner branches.
Case Study 2 BioFlora began a second trial on 80 acres of Cotton (variety Americot NexGen®) in Afton, Texas. The purpose of this trial was to test if using a blend of Humega® and BioFlora Seaweed Creme® would increase yield and cottonseed quality. As a soil treatment, the Humega and BioFlora Seaweed Creme blend was applied at 10 gallons/acre in the seed row. Bovine manure compost was applied at 2 tons/acre as a nitrogen source. Irrigation was applied by side roll. The control field followed their conventional program, with manure-based compost at 2 tons/acre. Humega Is an organic, biologically advanced humic acid, which facilitates soil tilth and boosts microbial activity. We utilize a proprietary extraction process that is unique to our business, which aids our approach in maximizing the integrity of humic acids we are able to procure. Science is only beginning to grasp the benefits that humic acids have for plant life; these organic acids have been proven to increase the rate and percentage of seed germination, stimulate plant growth, amplify root system development as well as increase biomass yield. BioFlora Seaweed Creme Begins with a type of hand-harvested, sun-dried Ascophllyum nodosum sourced from the pristine cold waters of the North Atlantic. This seaweed is homogenized, processed at ambient temperatures, and then enhanced within our patented organic minerals. This procedure secures all of the natural, beneficial qualities contained in seaweed (amino acids, vitamins, auxins, gibberellins, folic and folinic acids etc.) in order to stimulate increasing flowering, setting, and cell density for better quality crops and produce. Our Results
BioFlora treated, notice fully developed root structure.
Control, notice underdeveloped root structure
Case Study 3 BioFlora began a third trial on Cotton (variety Bayer Fibermax) in Tahoka, Texas on 90 acres. The purpose of this trial was to test whether using the same blend of Humega and Seaweed Creme would improve water penetration, reduce soil crusting, stimulate seed germination, and increase micronutrient uptake. As a soil treatment, the Humega and BioFlora Seaweed Creme blend was applied at 15 gallons/acre via drip irrigation. GOgreen was also applied at 1 qt/acre during pre-plant via drip irrigation. N-phuric acid was also utilized at 5.5 gallons per acre as a source of urea and sulfuric acid. Our Results The BioFlora field realized an average yield of 4.13 bales per acre (treated). The grower’s field realized only an average yield of 3.5 bales per acre (untreated). Taproot length, adventitious root mass, and lateral root mass all displayed improvement in the BioFlora plants. Case Study 4 BioFlora began our last trial on Cotton (variety Americot NexGen) in Afton, Texas on 97 acres. The purpose of this trial was to test whether using a blend of GOgreen would improve nitrogen uptake, organic matter content, and bolls per acre. For the soil treatment, 1 quart of GOgreen was mixed with a pre-plant herbicide and applied 7 days before planting. Bovine manure compost was applied at 2 tons/acre as a nitrogen source. Irrigation was applied by pivot. The control field utilized a conventional program, with manure-based compost at 2 tons/acre.

Our Results In the GOgreen treated plants, nitrogen uptake increased by 13%.Sodium levels were reduced by 3% in the BioFlora field. Treated organic matter increased by 8%. GOgreen treated plants averaged 18 bolls per plant at harvest. The control averaged 12 bolls per plant. GOgreen treated plants were larger than the control plants. Yield increased by 0.5 bales per acre.
