The Dirty Work: Avocado Case Study

BioFlora Brings Back Avocado Fields
BioFlora conducted a four year trial on an avocado field in Goleta, California to help mitigate sodium buildup, which had occurred due to the use of sodium irrigation water and a prolonged drought, and; lessen alternate bearing of avocados. Our Method The grower used a conventional fertilizer application based on the use of UN 32, potassium and calcium. BioFlora utilized the four top performers from our agricultural product line: Humega® is our organic biologically active humic acid, which facilitates soil tilth and boosts microbial activity. BioFlora Seaweed Creme® is our hand-harvested, non-extracted seaweed, enhanced with minerals to stimulate flowering, fruit set and cell density. DynaMega® 2-1-1 is an exclusive blend of fish solubles and seaweed, excellent for crop finishing, improving color, Brix levels and size. Fulmega™ 1% Mg is an ionic magnesium supplement that assists with higher yields and quality.
This tree has produced over 10,000 pounds of avocados per acre during one growing season with BioFlora products.
Our ResultsYear 1 Annual production of the 65 acres was 50,000 pounds (769 lbs/acre). Low fertility plus a severe drought were credited for the production total.Year 2 Humega was applied at a rate of 25 gallons per acre, plus the grower standard program. Production increased to over 300,000 pounds (4,615 lbs./acre). Year 3 Humega was increased to 50 gallons per acre, plus the grower standard program.
With BioFlora products, these transplant trees are able to grow in high clay and high sodic soils.
Production increased to over 450,000 pounds (6,923 lbs/acre). Year 4 Humega was increased to 100 gallons per acre in addition to: BioFlora Seaweed Creme and Fulmega (both 1 quart/acre) and; DynaMega (2 quarts/acre) plus two foliar pesticide applications. Production increased to over 750,000 pounds (11,538 lbs/acre). Field Update After this trial, the grower applied potassium at 75 – 100 pounds per acre, nitrogen at 1 – 1.5 pounds per tree and reduced the Humega application to 70 gallons per acre. BioFlora Seaweed Creme, Fulmega and DynaMega are still applied as foliars. Improved yields show that the sodium levels in the soils were reduced, and avocados were no longer alternate bearing. Also, disease presence of Phytophthora, which was noticed in the field, has decreased over the four years of the trial, and continues to be suppressed with BioFlora.
