What is Biotechnology?

Aug 19, 2014
As our name suggests, biotechnology is at the core of what we do at BioFlora®. Science, research and expertise make up the foundation of everything we do. Through our partnership with the Integrated Life Science Research Center® (ILSRC) we are able to develop our own proprietary product formulae and analyze them in our facilities; this is in addition to conducting field trials and case studies in partnership with organizations around the globe.

The Science

Before we begin to understand what biotechnology is and how it works, let’s first look to the human body to form a scientific basis for understanding. As you are aware, the human body is able to take such matter as food and oxygen, and convert it into energy and other vital elements the body needs. This is known as biochemistry, and it occurs in all living organisms – crops included. Similarly, biotechnology is the mechanism by which scientists take raw materials and process them into the biological materials that a living organism needs and uses. At BioFlora our scientists utilize technology that takes our proven, patented mineral extraction process and creates a natural line of products, such as organic and sustainable fertilizers. These products are designed to take the natural processes by which crops live and grow, develop them and take them to the next level, nurturing the relationship between crops and soil. Wherever a crop is planted, living and growing, BioFlora will improve the quality of both the soil and the natural biochemical processes at work. As a result, we produce a more enriched, more plentiful crop for a wide variety of growers. This is biotechnology; our biotechnology. Don’t just take our word for it, according to BIO.org “Biotech is helping to heal the world by harnessing nature’s own toolbox and using our own genetic makeup to heal and guide lines of research…”

Why does biotechnology matter to us?

Biotechnology has played a huge part in shaping the agricultural industry for many years now, and in turn, it has shaped the way in which we are able to continuously advance at BioFlora. Our origin is firmly planted in agriculture, and as former growers we understand the importance of creating a symbiotic relationship between crop and soil. We aim for environmental sustainability in all that we do at BioFlora and preserving our eco-system is the only way in which we can achieve this. We use biotechnology to aid soil ecology, recovery, friability and fertility. Today we have over 30 unique, patented products that benefit growers, retailers and consumers alike. Through our continuous innovation in life sciences, we have evolved from product to program-based solutions, with our biotechnology being the driving force of BioFlora products. Designed to enhance plant growth and beneficial bacteria and fungi, while increasing disease suppression, these efforts have been propelled by the plant physiologists, microbiologists, environmental scientists, biochemists and technicians at the ILSRC. Their continued scientific exploration has contributed to worldwide groundbreaking research, which continues to result in the cutting-edge biotechnology behind our product line.

Why does biotechnology matter on a global scale?

Climate change is having a big impact on our ecosystems and this poses a threat to how food is produced. This is why we continually strive to create a partnership between crops and soil. We are not focused on the short-term. We are focused on the long term risks that climate change brings to all environments and we believe product innovation and sustainability is the answer. Climate scientist Simon Wang of Utah State University recently connected climate change to individual weather events, detailed in a study published in the journal of Geophysical Research Letters. His study focused on weather patterns that started with cold water off China, Vietnam and Taiwan, and ended with a devastating drought in California and a two-faced winter throughout the United States; bitter, cold and snowy in the Midwest and East, and warm and severely dry in the West. The U.S. drought monitor has declared 100 percent of the State of California in an official drought, an issue BioFlora® is continuously involved with to help growers retain and hold more water in the soils. Oxfam released a report in March, 2014 warning that climate change will also delay the fight against world hunger. We understand the importance of healthy soils for vigorous crops, and that is why life sciences will lead the way forward in tackling this growing threat. Scientific research and innovation through biotechnology will be necessary to curb the effects starvation will have on generations to come. We know that biotechnology is the way forward in making a difference. As well, the introduction of processed foods and the insurgence of soil mineral depletion have created an overall food market less apt to deliver the mineral requirements that were once provided in our food supply. As you know, minerals play a vital role in overall health and well-being, by aiding in disease prevention, nutrient exchange, improved cellular conductivity and many other biological functions. Soil mineral depletion prevents the necessary nutrients from being absorbed by the fruits and vegetables that are sold on our supermarket shelves and that are used as feed for livestock and farm-raised animals. One of the main goals at BioFlora (and of our products) is to increase the amount of minerals available in the soil, make them more readily available to the plant and enrich lifestyle of our planet.

Conclusion

Our case studies prove that biotechnology has the capability of producing higher crop yields with increased nutritional substance, which translates to more food for the hungry, agricultural solutions for nations challenged with feeding growing urban population centers plagued with increased processed foods, and an increased income for farmers and growers. Improved biotechnology to meet the challenges and demands facing nations worldwide, with a focus on sustainability to meet these challenges in the most environmentally responsible manner possible, is the future. At BioFlora®, it’s our mission. About BioFlora BioFlora is a division of Global Organics® Group (GOG), an international life sciences company that develops and manufactures proprietary organic and sustainable plant nutrition products and natural ionic minerals for human and animal health. For more than 40 years GOG and its BioFlora® business have been committed to preserving the earth’s ecosystem while providing superior plant nutrient systems. Located in Goodyear, Arizona, USA, GOG is able to serve customers both locally and globally with the use of Green Acres, its 1,200 acre research farm, as well as its USDA Permitted Integrated Life Science Research Center® (ILSRC).  For more information about Global Organics® Group, or to interview CEO and Managing Partner Luke Blotsky, please contact Sarah Van Wyk at svanwyk@globalorganicsgroup.com.
